Google Play Policy

April 7 — Google Play's new account deletion policy

Google Play introduced a new policy requiring developers to include in-app functionality that lets users delete their account and associated data. Developers must also provide a web link where users can request account deletion. Non-compliance may trigger enforcement, including app removal from the Play Store or similar measures.

The updated policy will appear on store listings and takes effect in early 2024. Developers must complete the Data safety form by December 7, 2023. How this option affects visitors browsing listing details — and whether they prefer apps that offer account deletion — remains to be seen. Given competitive upside, we expect more industry reporting on this next year.

April 7 — Google's new policy against user manipulation

Higher ratings and positive reviews can lift conversion on the Play Store. Some apps therefore incentivize five-star ratings. However, under a new Play Console policy effective May 31, 2023, such behavior violates Google Play policy. Google Play also disallows apps whose primary purpose is incentivizing users to install other apps or rate other apps. These measures aim to stop apps from artificially inflating downloads, ratings, and reviews for unfair advantage on the Play Store.
